This initiative is part of the Clean Sri Lanka program and is supported by a financial allocation of Rs. 430 million. The project aligns with the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive society that upholds equal opportunities and human dignity.
Ten new air-conditioned buses, specifically designed for easy access by wheelchair users, will be deployed in the first phase. Each bus can accommodate up to 80 passengers, including 33 seats, and features advanced safety technologies tailored for wheelchair users.
The service will operate between Makumbura, Pettah, and Kadawatha, covering major healthcare centers such as Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and Colombo National Hospital. To ensure smooth and safe operations, 28 selected drivers from the Sri Lanka Transport Board have received specialized training. This marks a significant step forward in improving public transport accessibility for all citizens.
