The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) has informed Asanga S. Bodaragama that the suspect arrested in connection with a high-profile courtroom assassination will remain in custody for further questioning.

In a report submitted on April 20, the CCD stated that Ishara Sewwandi has been granted an additional 30-day detention order to facilitate ongoing investigations. The suspect was initially taken into custody over alleged links to the killing of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, a figure known by the alias “Ganemulle Sanjeeva.”

The assassination occurred on the morning of February 19, 2025, inside Courtroom No. 05 at the Hulftsdorp Court Complex a shocking breach of security in one of the country’s most prominent judicial venues.

According to investigators, the extended detention period is necessary to gather further evidence and question the suspect in greater depth regarding potential accomplices and the planning behind the attack. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional suspects but indicated that inquiries are ongoing.

The brazen nature of the courthouse has raised serious concerns about security protocols and the reach of organized criminal elements in Colombo. Law enforcement officials have pledged to pursue all leads and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
