M. A. Sumanthiran, General Secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), has welcomed the resignation of Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, but sharply criticized the government and ruling party MPs for previously defending him.

In a statement posted on his ‘X’ platform, Sumanthiran said it was unacceptable that the government and members of the National People’s Power (NPP) had continued to protect Jayakody, even after the administration itself acknowledged that imported coal was of substandard quality.

He argued that allowing the minister to remain in office under such circumstances undermined accountability and public trust.

Jayakody tendered his resignation yesterday (17), stating that his decision was intended to support ongoing investigations by the Special Presidential Commission appointed to probe the procurement of substandard coal.
