Veteran Archaeologist Dr. Sirinimal Lakdusinghe passes away at 86

Dr. Sirinimal Lakdusinghe, a towering figure in Sri Lanka’s field of archaeology and a former Director of Museums, has passed away at the age of 86.

Dr. Lakdusinghe was widely recognized as the first Sri Lankan scholar to obtain both a postgraduate degree and a doctoral qualification in archaeology within the country. His academic journey was further enriched by advanced studies in several foreign countries, earning him multiple postgraduate credentials.

In addition to his contributions to archaeology, he was also actively involved in leftist politics while continuing his scholarly pursuits. A prolific intellectual, Dr. Lakdusinghe authored numerous academic works and made lasting contributions to research and education.

Beyond academia, he was known as a poet, short story writer, and researcher, reflecting a deep engagement with both the sciences and the arts.

Final rites for the late Dr. Sirinimal Lakdusinghe are scheduled to take place this afternoon (16) in Weyangoda.
