Two bodies were recovered on Wednesday (15) following a tragic drowning incident in the Mahaweli River near the Verugal Aru bridge.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (14) when a father and his four sons were caught in strong currents while bathing in the river. The group was swept away, leading to a major rescue operation.

The father and one son managed to survive the incident, while three others were initially reported missing. Authorities confirmed that two of the missing individuals were found dead on Wednesday, while search operations are still underway to locate the remaining person.

The deceased, aged 34 and 35, were among the four sons who had returned home from Colombo for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays.
