The No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody was defeated in Parliament today by a majority of 104 votes.

A total of 153 MPs voted against the motion, while 49 voted in favour.

The motion was presented by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ajith P. Perera, citing alleged irregularities in coal procurement and indictments filed before the Colombo High Court.

Earlier this month, the opposition submitted the motion to the Speaker, alleging that the Minister had failed to ensure the timely procurement of sufficient and quality coal for the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai.

They further claimed that the alleged lapses in overseeing the country’s key power facility amounted to a serious breach of ministerial responsibility.
