Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places in the sea areas around the island during the next 24 hours, according to the latest weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. today.

The forecast said that rainy conditions are expected in sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Winds are expected to be south-westerly or westerly in direction with speeds ranging between 25-35 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota.

The sea condition in these areas is likely to be fairly rough at times, while other sea areas around the island may experience slight to moderate conditions.

Meanwhile, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, the forecast added.
