152 foreign nationals remanded over online fraud in Chilaw

A total of 152 foreign nationals arrested over an alleged online financial fraud operation have been remanded until April 9 by the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court.

According to police, the suspects were taken into custody while staying at a hotel in Iranawila, Chilaw, which had been rented by the group. The arrests were carried out by the Computer Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following intelligence received from Military Intelligence.

The group comprises 137 Chinese nationals, 13 Bangladeshi nationals, and two Vietnamese nationals, police said.

The suspects were produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court on April 3, where they were ordered to be remanded. Further investigations into the incident are currently underway.
