Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Harini Amarasuriya, stated that the initiative aims to align teacher education with the country’s evolving education policies and long-term development goals.
The remarks were made during a meeting held on April 2 at the Ministry of Education in Isurupaya with members of the newly formed committee.
Chaired by Liyanage Amarakeerthi of the University of Peradeniya, the committee includes Arosha Adikaram, Poobalasundaram Iyengaran, and P. A. D. Anil, bringing together expertise from academia and the teacher education sector.
According to the Prime Minister, the committee will focus on identifying gaps in institutional management, evaluating existing infrastructure facilities, and assessing student welfare systems across the colleges. Special attention will also be given to improving sustainability, governance frameworks, and the overall learning environment.
The review is expected to examine how effectively current systems support teacher training and whether reforms are needed to strengthen the interaction between educators and trainees.
Officials said the committee will conduct field observations across all National Colleges of Education to gather first-hand insights before submitting its recommendations.
Secretary to the Ministry, Nalaka Kaluwewa, along with other ministry officials, also attended the meeting.
