Restoration work on the upcountry railway line between Nanu Oya and Ambewela is continuing without interruption following the recent disaster that caused widespread destruction across Sri Lanka.

The disaster resulted in significant loss of life and property, while also severely damaging critical public infrastructure, including the country’s railway network. In response, rehabilitation of damaged railway tracks and bridges is being carried out under the national “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” program.

The most severely affected section lies along the main railway line from Colombo to Badulla, particularly between Nanu Oya and Ambewela, near the Elgin Falls area. Minister Bimal Rathnayake conducted a field निरीpection on March 25, 2026, to assess the final-stage reconstruction work currently underway in the area.

According to officials, 14 locations along this հատված suffered major damage due to landslides, subsidence, and washouts. Restoration work has already been completed at 13 of these sites, successfully bringing them back to operational condition.

Ongoing work is now focused on the most critically damaged հատված between Elgin Falls and Ambewela railway station, where severe الأرض subsidence had occurred. The Minister reviewed the progress of these repairs during his visit.

Senior officials from the Department of Railways, including Chief Engineer (Upper District) Danushka Dissanayake, were also present during the inspection.

Authorities stated that efforts are being made to expedite the remaining work and restore full railway operations in the المنطقة as soon as possible.
