The Sri Lanka Police has issued a public advisory warning citizens about increasingly deceptive methods used by criminals to steal money, gold, and other valuables.

According to the advisory, offenders often approach victims in a friendly manner in public places or on transport, pretending to be acquaintances to gain trust. In some cases, they offer food or drinks laced with intoxicants or use substances like chilli powder and toxic sprays to overpower individuals.

The warning follows recent serious incidents in Kokkadichcholai, where two women were abducted, drugged, and robbed, resulting in one fatality and another narrowly escaping.

Police urge the public to remain vigilant: avoid accepting food, drinks, or transport from strangers, stay alert in crowded areas, and safeguard personal belongings. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately via emergency numbers 119 or 118, or to the nearest police officer.
