Issuing a special advisory, the Police Media Division said suspects are increasingly targeting unsuspecting individuals by using deceptive tactics, including offering food or drinks laced with intoxicating substances and employing harmful agents to immobilise victims.
Police noted that despite round-the-clock operations and the deployment of officers across the country, recent incidents indicate that members of the public continue to fall victim to serious crimes due to negligence and lack of awareness.
Citing a recent incident in the Kokkadicholai Police Division, authorities said two women were abducted on separate occasions and forced to consume a substance that rendered them unconscious. The suspects then robbed them of their gold jewellery, with one victim killed and the other narrowly escaping death.
Police warned that criminals often approach victims in a friendly manner in public places or on public transport to gain their trust before carrying out such crimes.
The public has been strongly advised not to accept food, beverages or any items, including bottled water, from unknown individuals. They were also cautioned to be alert to the use of substances such as poisonous sprays or chilli powder, which could be used to harm or incapacitate victims.
Among other safety measures, police urged the public to avoid accepting transport from strangers, refrain from unnecessary interaction with unknown persons, and remain watchful of personal belongings, including cash and jewellery.
Authorities further requested the public to immediately report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to emergency hotlines 119 or 118, or inform the nearest police officer.
