The Iranian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dr. Alireza Delkhosh, has expressed gratitude to the Sri Lankan government and people for the humanitarian assistance and hospitality extended to Iranian sailors affected by a recent maritime incident.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Iranian Embassy, the ambassador emphasized Iran’s continued commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka. He described Sri Lanka as a friendly nation and reaffirmed Iran’s cooperative and open approach toward its international partners.

Dr. Delkhosh highlighted the importance of maintaining strong and collaborative ties between the two countries, noting that Iran values the well-being of Sri Lanka and its people. He also stated that Sri Lankans are highly respected within Iran.

Addressing concerns about foreign nationals in Iran, the ambassador assured that comprehensive infrastructure is in place to support and protect them, including Sri Lankans. He noted that no major issues have been reported and that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure their safety and well-being. He added that those wishing to return to their home countries could do so via neighboring countries such as Turkey.

The ambassador also referred to a tragic incident involving the Iranian naval vessel “IRIS Dena,” which reportedly came under attack near Sri Lankan waters. He claimed the vessel was targeted by a United States submarine while it was in the region for a friendly visit following naval exercises in India. According to him, the crew was not in a combat-ready state at the time of the attack.

He reiterated his appreciation for the assistance provided by Sri Lanka to the surviving crew members and cadet officers, acknowledging the country’s swift humanitarian response during the crisis.
