Under the revised pricing structure, the minimum bus fare has been increased from Rs. 27 to Rs. 30. Meanwhile, the maximum fare has risen significantly from Rs. 2,159 to Rs. 2,422—an increase of Rs. 263.
The proposal for the fare hike was presented to the Cabinet of Ministers earlier today and received approval amid rising operational costs in the transport sector.
The National Transport Commission (NTC) had previously indicated that recent fuel price increases—particularly the surge in Lanka auto diesel prices—had a major impact on the fare revision formula. According to the NTC, the fuel adjustments alone pushed the required fare increase beyond 10% compared to existing rates.
Transport authorities say the revision aims to help bus operators cope with escalating fuel costs while maintaining service continuity. However, the increase is expected to place an additional burden on daily commuters already facing rising living expenses.
