A shortage of bus services was reported in several parts of Sri Lanka today (March 23), causing inconvenience to daily commuters, according to the Director General of the National Transport Commission, Dr. Nilan Miranda.

Dr. Miranda stated that although a limited number of buses remain in operation, services along expressways have come to a complete halt. As a result, passengers have been forced to rely on alternative routes using regular roads, leading to delays and overcrowding.

He further noted that buses operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) are functioning as usual. However, a significant decline in privately operated bus services has contributed to the current shortage.

Meanwhile, the National Transport Commission is set to submit a proposal to revise bus fares to the Cabinet later this evening. According to Dr. Miranda, the proposed revision includes a fare increase of over 10 percent, with approximately 350 updated fare categories covering both minimum and maximum charges.

Authorities say the public will be officially informed once Cabinet approval is granted.
