Authorities have launched a wide-ranging investigation into the alleged misuse of QR codes linked to Sri Lanka’s fuel distribution system, officials from the Ministry of Digital Economy confirmed.

According to the ministry, details of suspects involved in незаконный QR code usage have been handed over to the Computer Crimes Division through the Inspector General of Police. Investigators have already begun examining 153 mobile phones as part of the ongoing probe.

Sumudu Rathnayaka, Advisor to the Ministry of Digital Economy, stated that the irregularities surfaced during a system update process where users were required to cancel existing accounts and register for new QR codes. Some individuals are suspected of attempting to obtain multiple QR codes by using the personal and vehicle details of previous owners.

Officials emphasized that such actions are illegal and warned that strict legal measures will be taken against offenders. “Using another ব্যক্তি’s vehicle information to secure a QR code violates the law and undermines the integrity of the fuel distribution system,” Rathnayaka noted.

The QR-based fuel rationing system, introduced to manage fuel distribution efficiently, has already seen over six million registrations nationwide.

Authorities urge the public to comply with regulations and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
