Addressing lawmakers, Hemachandra highlighted that more than one million Sri Lankans are currently employed across the Middle East, making their safety a national priority. He emphasized that remittances sent by these workers remain a vital pillar of Sri Lanka’s economy.
The government has urged all foreign embassies and diplomatic missions to maintain updated registries of Sri Lankan nationals abroad and to establish direct communication channels with them. These measures aim to ensure rapid response and assistance in case of emergencies.
Hemachandra also expressed appreciation for diplomatic staff, labour officials, and overseas personnel for their swift actions in protecting Sri Lankan workers during this period of uncertainty. He extended gratitude to key sectors—including tourism, hospitality, and aviation—for their cooperation in supporting affected citizens.
Reaffirming Sri Lanka’s diplomatic stance, the Deputy Minister called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict and a peaceful resolution through dialogue. “We urge all parties to respect international law and humanitarian principles, end hostilities, and return to negotiations,” he said.
The government continues to monitor the situation closely while coordinating with international partners to ensure the safety and well-being of Sri Lankans living and working abroad.
