During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Japan highlighted the need for stronger partnerships under the vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” while Sri Lanka reiterated its strategic role in the Indian Ocean and its commitment to regional maritime security in line with international law.
Discussions also covered ongoing and future defence cooperation, including joint naval exercises, ship visits, and training opportunities. Special attention was given to the recent visit of the JS Onami of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force to Colombo, which included a successful goodwill exercise with the Sri Lanka Navy.
The two countries agreed to continue dialogue and enhance cooperation in areas such as maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and personnel exchanges. Sri Lanka also reaffirmed its neutral and non-aligned foreign policy while engaging constructively in regional security efforts.
Deputy Minister Jayasekara expressed appreciation for Japan’s longstanding support, including assistance during natural disasters such as Cyclone Ditwa. He also acknowledged Japan’s contributions to Sri Lanka’s maritime and meteorological capabilities and requested continued support, particularly in strengthening weather forecasting systems.
