According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, the advisory—issued at 12.30 p.m.—is valid until 11.00 p.m. tonight.
The warning applies to the Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Central, and Uva provinces, as well as the Vavuniya, Kurunegala, and Ampara districts, where thundershowers are likely to occur in some areas after 1.00 p.m.
The Department noted that temporary localized strong winds may also accompany the thunderstorms, posing potential risks to life and property.
The public has been urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by lightning activity. Authorities advised people to seek shelter indoors and avoid staying under trees during thunderstorms.
Residents are also cautioned to avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies, while refraining from using wired electrical appliances and telephones during lightning conditions.
Additionally, the public is advised to avoid using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats, and to remain vigilant about fallen trees and power lines.
In case of emergencies, people are requested to contact local disaster management authorities.
The Meteorology Department further stated that the Amber alert level indicates the need for preparedness, urging the public to remain alert to evolving weather conditions.
