A Sri Lankan passenger attempting to smuggle a stock of ‘Kush’ valued at approximately Rs. 51.4 million into the country was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), this morning.

The suspect, identified as a 32-year-old businessman from Muttur, was apprehended by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau while attempting to exit the airport.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had purchased the consignment in Bangkok, Thailand, before travelling to Bangalore, India, and subsequently arriving in Sri Lanka on IndiGo flight 6E-1183 at around 12:30 a.m. on March 20.

He had concealed the narcotics in two suitcases with specially prepared false compartments. The haul, weighing 5 kilograms and 140 grams, had been divided into four packages.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today (March 20), where authorities are expected to seek a detention order to carry out further investigations.
