The victim has been identified as a resident of the Ganewalpola area. According to the Maradankadawala Police, the child had gone to the tank at midday with her grandmother to bathe when the predator suddenly attacked and dragged her away.
Following the incident, a joint search operation was immediately launched by local villagers, police officers, and officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Amidst the search efforts, the crocodile reportedly abandoned the girl and fled further into the water.
Although the child was recovered and rushed to the Maradankadawala Hospital, medical staff confirmed she had already succumbed to her injuries.
