According to the Commission, the suspect claimed that the Rs. 60 million had been paid in three instalments to the former President, while an additional Rs. 20 million was allegedly given to former Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne.
Investigations further revealed that a shell company had allegedly been set up in Brunei under the name of the suspect’s wife, with a corresponding bank account opened in Singapore. Through this arrangement, a sum of €1,454,645.54 is alleged to have been obtained from the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company as bribes.
The Commission also stated that the funds were later transferred to an account held by the suspect at a bank in Australia, with portions of the money allegedly distributed among a director of SriLankan Airlines and several senior government officials.
Kapila Chandrasena was arrested in connection with these charges, and Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered that he be remanded in custody until April 2.
