National Eye Hospital Director, Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara, said the initiative, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Institute of Ophthalmologists, will provide high-quality intraocular lenses free of charge, thanks to a generous donation from a supporting institution. The hospital will cover all additional costs related to the surgeries.
“This programme is focused on patients already on the waiting list who have been severely affected by cataracts,” Dr. Bandara explained, emphasizing that no new registrations will be accepted for this special drive.
Specialist doctors, medical officers, nurses, and supporting staff will join forces to ensure the programme runs smoothly, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to restoring sight and improving quality of life for those affected.
The surgeries will take place over two days, March 21 and 22, marking one of the largest coordinated cataract surgery efforts in recent years.
