The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to submit updated regulations on the reservation of special vehicle numbers to Parliament for approval.

Previously, regulations published in the Extraordinary Gazette on 5 October 2023 allowed the reservation of up to 50,000 special numbers for all motor vehicles under the Department of Motor Traffic.

The amended regulations, issued through Extraordinary Gazette Notifications No. 2470/14 and 2026-01-05, expand the legal provisions to reserve up to 100,000 special numbers for all motor vehicles except motorcycles, motor tricycles, and motor tricycle vans. Under the new rules, a fee of Rs. 1,000,000 will be charged for each reserved number.

The Cabinet’s approval ensures the regulations will now be presented to Parliament for formal ratification.
