The narcotics haul, valued at over Rs. 3 billion, was discovered aboard a multi-day fishing trawler intercepted by the Sri Lanka Navy during a special operation. The vessel, along with its five-member crew, was escorted to Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour on Monday (March 16) and later handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) for further investigations.
Intelligence sources indicate that the smuggling attempt is part of a broader network of operations. Paravi Suda is also suspected to be behind another major interception last week, which resulted in the seizure of over 600kg of heroin and crystal methamphetamine, along with 11 sophisticated firearms, including T-56 assault rifles and M-16 rifles.
Police further suspect that the trafficker is working in coordination with other high-profile fugitives, including Dippitigoda Lahiru and Konda Ranji, who are believed to be operating from overseas.
Investigators believe the smuggled firearms were not solely intended for protection. Instead, police suspect the weapons were meant to be leased to local criminal groups for use in organized crime activities and targeted killings.
