30 years since Sri Lanka’s historic 1996 World Cup Triumph

Thirty years ago today, Sri Lanka national cricket team achieved a historic victory by defeating the Australia national cricket team by seven wickets in the final of the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

The final was played on March 17, 1996, in Lahore, where Sri Lanka successfully chased a target of 242 runs with 22 balls to spare. The team, led by captain Arjuna Ranatunga, delivered one of the most memorable performances in cricket history.

All-rounder Aravinda de Silva was the star of the match, scoring an unbeaten 107 runs and taking three wickets for 42 runs, playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s first-ever World Cup victory.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of that unforgettable triumph that changed Sri Lankan cricket forever.
