The vessels were intercepted in deep waters by the Sri Lanka Navy, which seized one fishing boat carrying five suspects and another carrying five suspects. The vessels were brought to the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour on the 12th.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau. Officers said the suspects, aged between 22 and 49, are residents of Iranawila, Mahawewa, Melsiripura, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Nakulugama, Tangalle, Netolpitiya and Gandara.

The suspects have been charged with the possession, importation and trafficking of 176 kilograms and 568 grams of heroin and 478 kilograms and 326 grams of crystal methamphetamine (ice). Authorities also seized eight pistols, 15 magazines, two T-56 rifles, an M16-type firearm and four additional magazines.

Police said the total quantity of drugs seized—about 654 kilograms—has an estimated street value of more than Rs. 10 billion. Investigations are continuing.
