The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, seeks to bring together Local Government Authorities and manufacturers to manage 2D polythene and plastic waste, which has become a major environmental challenge in the country.
The program was presided over by Minister Prof. Chandana Abeyrathne, while heads of Local Government Authorities and senior officials from the Western Province participated in the awareness session.
According to officials, the program will initially be implemented as a pilot project, with plans to expand it across the country in the near future.
Among those present at the event were North Western Province Governor Tissa Warnasuriya, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government M. Kodippiliarachchi, Director General of the Central Environmental Authority Kapila Mahesh Rajapaksa, Director of the National Solid Waste Management Support Center Eng. Pushpa Kumara, President of the Institute of Environmental Professionals Sri Lanka Asela Iddawela, Director of the Western Province Waste Management Authority Nalin Mannapperuma, and a number of heads of Local Government Authorities.
