He emphasized that teachers as well as parents should pay special attention to the safety of students participating in outdoor sports during this period of intense heat.
The warning comes after a tragic incident in which a school student from Buttala lost his life yesterday while taking part in a marathon training session. The student, who was in Grade 11, reportedly fell ill suddenly during the training and later passed away.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has already issued a circular to schools advising them to limit outdoor activities as much as possible because of the strong sunlight and high temperatures experienced these days.
Health authorities have also requested that students be allowed to participate in sports events only after considering medical reports and fitness conditions.
Sports doctors further advise that students should drink plenty of water while engaging in physical activities to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
