Three Sri Lankan youths selected for training in the forestry sector under Japan’s Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) left for Japan today (11), marking the first time Sri Lankans have been given training opportunities in this newly added field.

The trainees were sent under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and IM Japan. The presentation of air tickets to the group took place at the Bureau premises under the patronage of SLBFE Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe.

Along with the forestry trainees, six other Sri Lankan trainees who received opportunities in the construction sector also departed for Japan as part of the same group.

Under the agreement between the SLBFE and IM Japan, Sri Lankan youth between the ages of 18 and 30 are eligible to undergo technical in-service training in Japan. In addition to the newly introduced forestry sector, Sri Lankans currently receive training opportunities in seven other sectors.

Applicants are required to possess Japanese language proficiency, having passed either the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or the Japan Foundation Test (JFT) at the N5 level, along with the relevant skills test. Candidates must also have sat for the Advanced Level examination to qualify for the programme. The Bureau also noted that applicants must not have tattoos on their bodies.

According to the SLBFE, a total of 659 Sri Lankan trainees have been sent to Japan for technical in-service training under this programme so far.

The Bureau further stated that a support programme is also being implemented to assist trainees who successfully complete their training in Japan and return to Sri Lanka to start their own businesses.
