Association Chairman N. K. Jayawardena said many bakeries rely on diesel, petrol and kerosene that are usually transported in cans, but recent regulations preventing fuel from being issued in cans have disrupted their operations.
He made these remarks during a press conference held at the association’s headquarters at the Raddolugama Housing Complex.
Jayawardena explained that about 25% of bakeries in the country operate using gas, while 25% to 30% depend on diesel and kerosene as their main energy sources. The remaining bakeries use firewood and other alternative fuels.
He noted that the industry is currently facing several challenges, including fuel shortages, gas supply issues and power outages reported in several parts of the country.
Despite these difficulties, Jayawardena said the bakery industry does not expect to increase the prices of bakery products at present. He added that bakery owners have already been informed about the ongoing gas shortages and price increases in the country.
