An agreement to transfer the printing of vehicle number plates to a new private company was signed today (10), marking a step toward resuming the service after months of delay.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, Kamal Amarasinghe, the Secretary to the Ministry of Road Transport and Urban Development and the Board of Directors of the relevant private company.

Speaking at the event, Amarasinghe stated that according to the agreement the company is expected to begin printing number plates within three months. He noted that the procurement process took a considerable period of time and the agreement was finalized after receiving Cabinet approval and legal advice from the Attorney General's Department of Sri Lanka.

However, he said several preliminary discussions had already been held with the company and it is expected that operations could begin within about two months. The project, valued at approximately Rs. 3 billion, has been awarded to the company for a period of five years.

Amarasinghe further stated that the work will be carried out at the Werahera premises of the Department of Motor Traffic, adding that number plate printing has been halted for nearly ten months. He said the company has already begun basic construction work at the site and informed authorities that arrangements are being made to import the required printing machines, with expectations to commence printing around late April or early May.
