The day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, declaring March 8 as International Women’s Day. Since then, all member states of the organization have commemorated the day annually, highlighting the achievements and contributions of women while promoting gender equality and empowerment.
This year, Sri Lanka marks the occasion under the theme “She Leads the Nation Towards Prosperity”“Pohosath Ratak Abhiman Eya Wey Daeyaka Peramaga”).
A range of awareness programs, discussions, and community activities have been arranged across the country to recognize the role of women in national development and to promote their participation in social, economic, and political spheres.
