The figure is significantly higher than the 59 deaths reported by the Government of Sri Lanka in February 2025.
According to the report, the data were obtained from Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, a government body responsible for handling prisoners of war and monitoring foreign fighters involved in the conflict.
The investigation also highlights the difficulties faced by Sri Lankan war widows seeking compensation that had allegedly been promised to their husbands who died while fighting for Russia. In addition, the report points to the involvement of illicit agents and recruitment networks believed to be facilitating the enlistment of Sri Lankans into the Russian military.
