In a statement shared on social media platform X, Rajapaksa stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean while monitoring developments linked to the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushier, which has been allowed to enter Sri Lankan waters.
He welcomed the decision by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to permit the vessel to dock at Trincomalee Port and bring its 208 crew members to Colombo on humanitarian grounds.
Rajapaksa said Sri Lanka must continue to maintain a neutral stance in the ongoing conflict while fulfilling its obligations under international law and extending humanitarian support when required.
He also expressed hope that the government would encourage dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict in order to maintain peace and stability in the Gulf region and across the globe.
