According to officials, the suspect had allegedly requested the bribe in exchange for providing assistance in securing bail for a suspect who had been arrested and remanded in custody by the Illegal Property or Assets Investigation Division. The businessman had also reportedly promised to assist in preventing the arrest of the suspect’s family members.
Following the arrest, the suspect was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. The court ordered that he be remanded in custody until March 13, 2026.
Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
