More than 80 bodies have been recovered so far from the Iranian naval ship IRIS Dena, which sank off the southern coast of Sri Lanka following a reported attack by a U.S. military submarine, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra said.

The vessel, which had been returning to Iran from a port in eastern India, went down early Wednesday after issuing a distress call. Officials initially estimated that around 180 people were onboard at the time of the incident.

Sri Lankan naval and air rescue teams were dispatched to the site, where dozens of survivors have been pulled from the water and are being treated at hospitals.
