The growing intrusion of wild animals such as elephants, wild boars, monkeys, baboons, cheetahs and peacocks into human settlements and cultivated lands has severely affected rural agricultural livelihoods and national food security. The situation has also led to frequent incidents of property damage and heightened social and economic challenges.
In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation formulated a broad programme to manage crop damage and threats to human life caused by wildlife. The proposals were developed after consulting stakeholders including members of the public, university experts, farmer organisations, environmentalists, NGOs and relevant government departments.
Following submissions made by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, the Cabinet decided to appoint a Ministerial Committee chaired by the Minister, with the participation of other relevant Ministers, to review the proposals and recommend an effective implementation mechanism, while incorporating any additional measures identified during the process.
