Sri Lanka’s international postal operations are facing mounting delays following widespread flight cancellations linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Postmaster General S. R. W. M. R. P. Sathkumara said.

Addressing the media today (03), he revealed that several consignments collected last Friday remain undelivered due to the inability to dispatch them through affected transit routes.

The Postmaster General explained that restrictions and airspace closures in parts of the Middle East have disrupted the shipment of goods to multiple destinations, with a high number of cancelled flights directly impacting international mail services.

He noted that Sri Lanka Post is maintaining continuous coordination with postal administrations in the relevant countries and has already taken steps to inform the public about the expected delays.

Sathkumara cautioned that perishable and time-sensitive items are particularly vulnerable under the current circumstances and urged customers to consider the situation carefully before sending goods overseas.

He further stressed that the disruption is not limited to Sri Lanka, but is also affecting recipient countries reliant on the same transit routes. Normal operations are expected to resume once regional conditions stabilise, he added.
