Expressing the Government’s position in Parliament, the President said that any war situation does not create a favourable environment for any group of people. He noted that in a world equipped with advanced military technology and powerful weapons, the destructive impact of such conflicts could be immense.
“As Sri Lanka, our position is that all parties involved in this war must take the necessary steps and provide leadership for a peaceful world as soon as possible,” he said.
President Dissanayake warned that the escalating conflict could have significant repercussions on Sri Lanka as well, adding that the country cannot remain isolated from global developments. He emphasised that a national programme would be prepared to address the potential challenges arising from the crisis, but underscored that long-term stability could only be ensured through international commitment to peace.
The President further stated that disruptions to oil and gas supplies were likely, while Sri Lankans employed in the Middle East could face serious difficulties. He added that key sectors of the economy — including tourism, foreign remittances, shipping and aviation — may also experience adverse effects.
He acknowledged that public anxiety was understandable given the hardships faced during previous crises, noting that society cannot be stabilised by words alone but through practical assurance and action that prevents a recurrence of economic turmoil.
The President said the Government, which has successfully navigated several challenges since assuming office, recognises that the current situation presents a different and uncertain set of risks. He stated that authorities are closely monitoring developments.
According to the President, the Central Bank is conducting a review of the evolving situation and is expected to submit a report on the potential economic impact by today or tomorrow evening. In addition, the Ministry of Finance is preparing an assessment of the possible effects on the public, while steps are being taken to formulate programmes to safeguard essential services for Sri Lankans both at home and abroad.
