Police Headquarters said that security measures have already been implemented at fuel distribution centers across the country to ensure orderly operations and prevent unrest.
Meanwhile, Police noted that sections of the public have begun unnecessarily stockpiling fuel amid fears of potential shortages. However, authorities reiterated that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has assured that sufficient fuel reserves are currently available in the country and urged the public to refrain from panic buying.
Authorities further observed that certain organized groups have been collecting fuel in cans, bottles, and other containers. As a precautionary measure, all police stations have been directed to coordinate with fuel station management to temporarily suspend the issuance of fuel into such containers until further notice.
Fuel will continue to be issued into containers strictly for essential purposes, including fishing vessels, factories and construction sites, agricultural activities, and specific household requirements.
Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found hoarding fuel to sell at inflated prices or spreading false information and rumors regarding fuel supplies through social media platforms.
