The annual chariot festival of the Arulmigu Sri Muthumariamman Temple in Matale commenced today (02) at 6:00 a.m., with five ceremonial chariots scheduled to parade through the streets of Matale town until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow (03).

A large number of devotees from across the island, as well as foreign tourists, are expected to attend the festival to witness the celebrations and receive blessings.

In parallel with the festival, several amusement zones and carnival grounds have been set up within Matale town. Police have warned that heavy traffic congestion is likely during this period due to the influx of visitors and related activities.

Accordingly, police have requested motorists traveling along the A009 road through Matale town — from Dambulla towards Kandy and vice versa — to use alternative routes during the festival period to avoid delays and congestion.
