Man arrested for illegally importing foreign cigarettes worth Rs. 5.4 M

A 21-year-old Sri Lankan businessman was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport last night (28) for attempting to illegally smuggle a large consignment of foreign-manufactured cigarettes into the country.

The suspect, a resident of Thalduwa, Appalapitiya, had arrived at the airport at around 7:30 p.m. from Dubai on Emirates flight EK-652.

According to officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau, the passenger had concealed 180 cartons containing 36,000 foreign cigarettes inside two suitcases. The stock is estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 5.4 million.

The cigarettes were seized by the officers upon inspection.

The suspect has since been released on police bail and is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on the 4th for further legal proceedings.
