According to the department, passengers who are unable to depart Sri Lanka before their visas expire due to the sudden flight suspensions will be eligible for a free seven-day visa extension.
The extension will be granted from the date of expiry of the traveler’s current visa, allowing affected individuals to remain legally in the country while making alternative travel arrangements. Authorities said the measure is intended to minimize inconvenience caused by the unexpected disruption to international air travel.
The announcement was made by the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, who emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting international visitors during unforeseen circumstances.
Affected passengers are advised to contact the Department of Immigration and Emigration directly for guidance on how to obtain the extension and complete the necessary formalities.
Officials reiterated that the temporary relief measure aims to ensure travelers are not penalized for overstaying due to circumstances beyond their control.
