Former Director of the State Intelligence Service, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, has been granted permission to be detained for 90 days for questioning in connection with ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Sallay was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as part of continuing probes into the coordinated bombings that killed more than 260 people and injured hundreds across Sri Lanka on April 21, 2019.

Authorities stated that the 90-day detention period will allow investigators to question the former intelligence chief under legal provisions applicable to national security investigations.

The 2019 attacks, commonly referred to as the Easter Sunday attacks, targeted churches and luxury hotels and remain among the deadliest terror incidents in Sri Lanka’s history. Multiple investigations and related legal proceedings are still ongoing.
