The event was held under the patronage of the Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasooriya, following his concept to enhance the operational capacity of the division through advanced technology.
The Police Close Circuit Surveillance Camera Division was originally established on December 29, 2010, and at the time, two camera-fitted vans were deployed for operational duties. In a move to improve efficiency and productivity, one of the vans was upgraded and donated by Prima Group with state-of-the-art camera systems.
A total sum of Rs. 9,794,000 has been spent on upgrading the two vans with modern technological equipment.
These camera-equipped vehicles are deployed for a wide range of duties, including traffic control, monitoring and gathering evidence for traffic-related offenses, providing security for local and foreign dignitaries, overseeing special security arrangements, religious and cultural events, nationally and internationally significant sporting events, collecting traffic management data, and monitoring protests, public unrest, and processions.
Among those present at the ceremony were Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Surveillance Camera Division, Thushara Gamlath; Director of the division, Senior Superintendent of Police Malin Perera; Officer-in-Charge Chief Inspector I.M.N.L.B. Ekanayake; and several other police officers.
