Sri Lanka will miss the total phase of the upcoming lunar eclipse on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as the Moon will be below the horizon during the most significant stages of the celestial event, the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies said.

Although the eclipse is categorized globally as a total lunar eclipse, local observers will only be able to witness the final partial phase after moonrise.

According to the institute, the total eclipse will begin at 4:34 p.m., reach its maximum at 5:03 p.m., and conclude at 5:32 p.m. — all before the Moon rises in Sri Lanka. Moonrise is expected at 6:21 p.m., at which time a portion of the Moon will still be covered by the Earth’s shadow.

The partial phase will end at 6:47 p.m., while the penumbral phase will conclude at 7:53 p.m. Earlier stages of the eclipse, including the beginning of the penumbral phase at 2:14 p.m. and the partial phase at 3:20 p.m., will not be visible locally as the Moon will remain below the horizon.

Astronomy experts advise the public to choose a cloud-free location with a clear view of the eastern horizon to observe the visible portion of the eclipse.

An image of the partial phase of the total lunar eclipse observed in Sri Lanka on September 7, 2025, captured by Mr. Heshan Gunasekara of the institute’s Astronomy Division, has been released alongside the announcement.
