A coalition of civil organization representatives lodged a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (27 February), calling for an investigation into the procurement of substandard coal and the alleged financial losses incurred by the country as a result.

Speaking to the media, Ananda Palitha, Convenor of the Samagi Joint Trade Union Alliance affiliated with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, expressed confidence that the current President would allow impartial investigations, citing a precedent where the former President did not interfere in legal proceedings against former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella over substandard medicine imports.

Palitha claimed that tenders were delayed and that the company involved had previously supplied substandard rice, which was later blacklisted by the Attorney General’s Department. “Now, the same company is being awarded the coal tender and given until July to get registered. The corruption is already evident, especially with emergency purchases,” he stated, highlighting concerns over irregularities in the tendering and procurement process.
