For the sixth consecutive year, the British Council is offering fully funded scholarships for women to study one-year master’s degree programmes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at leading universities in the United Kingdom.
The Women in STEM scholarship programme, delivered under the British Council’s Going Global Partnerships initiative, aims to increase opportunities for women in STEM, strengthen female leadership in science and innovation, and promote greater diversity and gender representation within the sector. Since its inception, the programme has partnered with 43 leading UK universities and awarded around 500 scholarships globally.
Each scholarship for 2026–27 is valued at a minimum of £40,000, covering tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, visa fees, health coverage and English language support. Scholars gain access to world-class research institutions and opportunities to connect with STEM experts and the UK’s global alumni network.
A total of 90 scholarships are available worldwide across 30 eligible countries. Of these, 25 scholarships are allocated for applicants from South Asia, including Sri Lanka, in partnership with five UK universities.
Orlando Edwards, Country Director of the British Council Sri Lanka, stated that Sri Lanka’s continued inclusion in the programme reflects a strong commitment to expanding opportunities and leadership pathways for women in science. He noted that empowering women in STEM fields contributes not only to individual career advancement but also to broader research, innovation and national development.
