Several trade unions representing government officials engaged in disaster relief operations have decided to withdraw from relief duties and commence trade union action from today (27).

The decision was announced in a joint statement issued by the All Island Disaster Relief Services Trade Union, the Technical Officers Trade Union and the Grama Niladhari Trade Union.

According to the statement, more than 93 days have passed since the disaster triggered by Cyclone Ditva, during which Disaster Relief Officers and Grama Niladharis have been working continuously as the primary coordinators between the government and affected communities.

The unions also noted that technical officers have played a key role at field level by preparing assessments and cost estimates required for compensation and relief payments.

Despite their sustained efforts, the unions alleged that the government has failed to adequately address the unresolved issues faced by officials involved in disaster relief duties.

As a result, the unions said collective trade union action had become inevitable.
